KEEPING CHILDREN SAFE AT MIS

Happier children do better

Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people is one of the commitments Myanmar International School takes into heart.  This commitment is expectedly shared by all staff, governors and volunteers. We believe that our school should provide a safe, nurturing, positive, and stimulating environment where students can learn in an environment that promotes the social, physical and emotional wellbeing of each individual.

We believe that it is always unacceptable for a child or young person to experience abuse of any kind. We recognise our responsibility to safeguard the welfare of all and strive to ensure our students are safe at school, at home, online and in the wider community. To fulfill this commitment, a number of safeguarding arrangements are in place.

Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is defined as:

  • Protecting children from maltreatment, physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse and neglect
  • Preventing impairment of children’s health or development
  • Ensuring children are growing up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care.

Child protection is a part of safeguarding and promoting welfare. It refers to the activity that is undertaken to protect specific children who are suffering, or are likely to suffer, significant harm or neglect. Effective child protection is essential as part of a wider task to safeguard and promote the welfare of children. However, all agencies and individuals should aim to proactively safeguard and promote the welfare of children so that the need for action to protect children from harm is reduced. Schools play an essential role in protecting children from abuse as schools have regular contact with children and young people, so they are in a strong position to identify signs of abuse and neglect. International schools have a moral as well as legal duty to safeguard the welfare of our students, as well as those children using our facilities or involved with our programs and activities.

Safeguarding Lead

I have been a part of the MIS team since October 2022, and now have taken on the role of Designated Safeguarding Lead at the school. This is a very challenging yet important role that my team and I will pursue, built on the premise that the school is a safe and happy environment where the child can grow and develop his or her potential. We will further enhance our approach to safeguarding and child protection year by year, and make sure it will have a positive impact on the wellbeing of students, our staff, stakeholders and their families.

As the Psychology teacher and the school’s emotional social support counselor, I have a keen interest in the safety of our school community. I have continually developed my professional knowledge and abilities by taking relevant courses and developing up to date policies and procedures. I have also networked with other counselors and child protection and safeguarding professionals from other international schools to build a network of support around Myanmar, to help each other in terms of local policies and finding the right point-persons in the community for specific concerns.

In my role as DSL, my goal is to provide training, to support and nurture our MIS family and encourage everyone’s proactive involvement to provide a safe and positive place to work, learn and grow.

If you have any questions, concerns or suggestions relating to safeguarding, please feel free to reach out and email us at safeguarding@rudiancesoftware.com.
